Blackbird Bakery Expands with The Nest

August 26, 2014
"The Nest" at Blackbird Bakery is now open for business. They have more than doubled their seating area, and have plenty of electrical outlets along with free WI-FI. Additionally, "The Nest" has an art gallery that will feature a new artist each month, and of course the art is for sale. Visit soon and bring a friend!

Located just off State Street, in the historical section of downtown Bristol, Virginia, Blackbird Bakery opened its doors in the summer of 2008. Since then, it has become a favorite bakery shop for the locals in Bristol and the Tri-City area.

When you visit the bakery, you will feel as though you stepped back to a time when neighbors and shop owners knew each other on a first name basis. Although the specialty of the house is doughnuts, you will also find delicious pastries and desserts ranging from mouth-watering baklava and brownies, to cheesecakes, cupcakes, and pies.

Bristol Public Library's Geek the Library Campaign

August 26, 2014
The Bristol Public Library has announced a huge book sale as their first event for Geek the Library. Geek the Library is a national campaign to help communities better understand how public libraries are funded. The book sale will feature books being discarded from the Library catalog and may donations of books and magazines made to the Library. All proceeds from the Geek the Library book sale will go to support the Teen/Young Adult programs and the Adult Learning Lab programs.

The sale will be from 9 AM – 5PM on Friday and Saturday, September 5th and 6th and 2 PM – 5 PM on Sunday, September 7th. Each day of the sale the first 3 shoppers who purchase $20 or more will receive a Geek the Library t-shirt.

“Very often people think public libraries receive lots of funding from government sources. While that is partially true, today’s climate means there is less and less government money to be spent on programs within libraries,” said Doris Stickley, marketing director for the Bristol Public Library. “We have two unique programs no other library is doing at the level of success we are. These stellar programs for our Young Adults/Teens and our Adult Learning Lab make such a difference for Bristol,” continued Stickley. “We have between 150 and 200 teens and young adults served in our YA program every week. These young patrons come to the BPL to read, to talk about books, to have a safe and fun environment. And, our Adult Learning Lab does so many things to help people looking for jobs—online applications, basic computer skills, resumes—along with teaching English as a Second Language and basic skills instruction. No other library is supporting their community in these two areas like the BPL does.”

The book sale will have lots of non-fiction, best sellers, romance, great magazines, and several other genres of literature. There will also be fact sheets on Geek the Library available. Each day of the sale the first 3 shoppers who purchase $20 or more will receive a Geek the Library t-shirt.

For more information, contact Doris Stickley at 276-821-6148.
