There is a limit to the number of citizens that can be accommodated, so please get your application in as soon as possible. The academy begins on October 17, 2013 and will run through December 3, with a graduation ceremony taking place during the city council meeting. Each week the class will meet on Thursday evenings for two hours at different locations throughout the city. During the class participants will have the opportunity to meet most all administrative staff including the City Manager, Fire Chief, Police Chief and other department heads. “One of the nice things is there are no tests,” laughed Terrie Talbert, Community Relations Director. “The academy is very laid back. There is plenty of one-on-one time with the different speakers and they are always happy to address any questions one might have.” To apply for the academy, go to the city website at www.bristoltn.org/cma.cfm and complete the application electronically or stop by the Bristol Public Library or City Hall (City Manager’s Office) and pick up the application. Bristol Public Library to Host Bristol Premiere of Documentary about Local Ghost Legends

On Sunday, October 13 at 2:30 PM in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room of the Bristol Public Library the Bristol premiere of the documentary film This Place is Haunted will be shown. The film is the work of Southwest Virginia native Jerry Sword whose belief that more films should be made within our local community to preserve the history and the legacy of our region led him to make, This Place is Haunted. Jerry Sword considers himself first and foremost a story teller. He is also a skilled song writer, director, independent film producer, and a newly published author. In 2006 two years after his graduation from King University in Bristol, Sword read the script for the motion picture Grizzly Park and composed what become the film’s theme song, “Dead Man’s Hands”. His song was chosen from more than 250 artists’ submissions. This achievement landed him a position working with Emmy-winning editor Neil Mandelberg, and he moved to Los Angeles in early 2007.Using the Civil War in this region as a backdrop and weaving in many historical facts, Sword blends little known ghost legends into a unique offering that should please both the historian and those who just like a good ghost story. The film features well-known local historian V. N. “Bud” Phillips as well as Abingdon’s own Donnamarie Emmert. After the film Sword will be available to answer questions from the audience. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Bristol Public Library on 276-645-8780.
