Here...There..And Yonder on display @ BPL
March 1–31, 2010
Virgie R. Fleenor Art Gallery Exhibit for March 2010
During the month of March the Bristol Public Library is hosting a show by three Kingsport artists. The show entitled,”Here . . .There . . . and Yonder...”, features familiar areas as well as pieces with wider ranging locations and subject matter. The three artists paint together on site or “plein air” as well as in their individual studios.
Born in Ohio and raised in Pennsylvania Gertrude Gerwig lived in many places, always painting. Before attending school, she drew on every available surface and when older was eventually drawn to oil painting. She received no formal art training but sat under exceptional teachers in Junior High and High School, and participated in several workshops in PA, FL, GA, NM and TN with nationally known instructors. After graduating high school, she worked as a commercial artist and immersed herself in fashion illustration, glass design and newspaper advertisement.
“I am attracted to the color and texture of all that is around me. Working “en plein air” or in the studio, I enjoy painting either inside or out, but would prefer working outside. I’ve been told I paint calm, serene, soothing paintings with the colors of Wolf Kahn”, says Gerwig.
Leslie Davis also has been painting since childhood. At a very young age she recalls participating in a class taught by an elderly lady walking with a cane. The cavernous, light filled room included students of various ages learning how to draw a symmetrical object. Encouraged by her parents throughout childhood, she continued her interest in art and received a degree in art education and a master’s in painting. After spending twenty years in the classroom at Lynn View High School and Sullivan Central High School she retired to paint full time and participate in the activities of several local art organizations. Davis says, “When painting I struggle constantly between the desire to put on canvas what is seen by my eyes and felt with my heart. For me, a successful painting is one whereby the emotions, intellect, and canvas are in agreement.”
Brenda Bundrant began painting about three years ago when a friend invited her to join a weekly painting group. This truly opened a door for her and has encouraged her to explore the local art community as well as participate in painting opportunities in our area. “There are so many interesting subjects as well as endless beauty in our area that, we are never at a loss for something to paint. Plein Air painting is a refreshing outlet for any artist and I find it addictive,” says Bundrant.
The show “Here… There… And Yonder…” will be on display in the Virgie R. Fleenor Art Gallery the entire month of March 2010. The library is open Monday- Thursday 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday- Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays 2 p.m.-5 p.m.
