The Quickening: A Survivor's Manifest

October 10, 2011

In collaboration with The Bristol Crisis Center, The Quickening: A Survivor's Manifest will be presented at Theatre Bristol on Saturday, October 15th at 2:00 & 7:00 p.m. An original work weaving the stories of four characters through their journey as victims of domestic violence and the moment that was their "quickening" and allowed them to break the cycle.

This script will examine four different experiences with domestic violence and how community interactions helped or hindered their understanding of the situation. The quickening is a term used during pregnancy to name the first moment a woman feels the baby move in her belly. It is evidence of new life growing within. For many trapped in abusive relationships, there comes a time when their personal core is reawakened by a pivotal experience. This moment provides an opportunity for the person experiencing abuse to make different choices. Thus, the script examines both this moment of new choices and the life experiences that inspired that opportunity.

“I just wanted to provide a safe space for people to tell their stories” Katherine Campbell, Domestic Violence Outreach Advocate at The Bristol Crisis Center. “With the statistics for domestic violence at 1 in 4, that represents a significant number of people affected in our community. After each performance of The Quickening: A Survivor’s Manifest, we will host a talk back session where the audience can discuss the creative process, share their own experiences, or meet the resources available to their community. ”

“There are many worthy causes that are highlighted every month throughout the year. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Theatre Bristol is honored to be working with The Bristol Crisis Center to present an original work The Quickening: A Survivor’s Manifest,” voiced by Emily Anne Thompson, Theatre Bristol’s Executive Director.
