Russell County's — Mountain Youth Drama will perform at Theatre Bristol ARTspace TONIGHT!

May 26, 2011

MOUNTAIN YOUTH DRAMA — Drug and alcohol use, peer and parental pressure, and life in general through the eyes of teens – that’s what Mountain Youth Dramas original sketch comedy and dramatic monologues portray. Mountain Youth Drama will perform for free at Theatre Bristol’s ARTspace on May 26th at 7 p.m. with donations taken to support Theatre Bristol’s theatre opportunities for children. The performance will have special appearances from previous cast members who return to add “flavor” to this year’s current show.

Lori Gates Addison, the current recipient of the Substance Abuse Certification Alliance of Virginia Life Time Achievement Award for Outstanding Work in the Field of Prevention started Mountain Youth Drama in 1994 to provide a creative outlet for high school teens in Russell County VA. “Not only does the show provide prevention messages to school age youth and community audiences but it reminds teens that they are not alone.” states Gates-Addison. The program meets 8 months out of the year and participating students sign contracts promising to stay free of drugs while also upholding passing grades in school. Over 80% of former cast members go on to college and often come back to support the program.

Funny and emotional, creative and honest this show illustrates the issues that teens wrestle with in Southwest Virginia and should be seen by youth and adults alike.
