Orthophonic Joy Winner Announced!

July 28, 2014
Birthplace of Country Music surprised a student on the campus of Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap, VA Thursday when, in front of an auditorium filled with people, they announced the winner of the Orthophonic Joy Music Contest was seated among them.

Corbin Hayslett, a student at the University of Virginia's College at Wise and an instructor at MECC's Mountain Music School, was attending the summer program's Master Musician's concert in the Goodloe Auditorium when BCM executive director Leah Ross called him to the stage. As Hayslett accepted his award, the room burst into applause.

For the past several weeks Birthplace of Country Music's Facebook page has been buzzing with activity. Musicians from all over the country have been posting dozens of music videos, all entries for the Orthophonic Joy Music Contest.

The contest was a search to find one artist or band to join Orthophonic Joy: The 1927 Bristol Sessions Revisited, a reimagining of the legendary 1927 Bristol Sessions, the groundbreaking recordings that continue to inspire artists around the world.

Set for release in October, Orthophonic Joy: The 1927 Bristol Sessions Revisited features entertainment legend Dolly Parton, as well as country music stars Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Marty Stuart, Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and Ashley Monroe. The recording project includes 16 of the original songs from the Bristol Sessions. As Grand Prize winner of the contest, Hayslett, will travel to Nashville to record with the project's Grammy Award-winning Nashville producer, Carl Jackson (Mark Twain: Words & Music) to record the final track on the CD.

Believe in Bristol Unveils Brand New T-Shirt Design and Other Merchandise

July 29, 2014
Bristol, VA-TN (July 28, 2014) Following in the footsteps of last year’s quirky –and massively successful- “Bigfoot Believes in Bristol” t-shirt, Believe in Bristol is pleased to present its new UFO centric design. Conceptualized to be a part of a series of offbeat apparel, these shirts inject a heavy dose of fun into local pride. “I think that these shirts will go a long way toward attracting more young people to our great downtown. Personally, I can’t wait to get a shirt for myself,” says Tahita Haynes, Events Coordinator at Birthplace of Country Music. The design of the shirts was inspired by the iconic “I Want to Believe” poster from the now classic television show The X-Files. All artwork featured on the shirts was provided by Bristol native Joey Curcio. Curcio, a talented artist, also practices law at Curcio & Stout. Along with the new shirts Believe in Bristol will be offering several new items such as a yo-yo, themed pencils, magnets, and a plush cow. The new merchandise is available now at the Believe in Bristol office which will begin functioning 7 days a week as a Visitors Center starting August 1, 2014.

Believe in Bristol’s mission is to foster the collaborative vibrant nature of both Bristols by building a community of culture, lifestyle, heritage, music, and economy. Believe in Bristol strives to strengthen the heart and soul of our Historic Downtown and facilitate its future growth by implementing the Main Street Four Point Approach focusing on Organization, Design, Promotion and Economic Restructuring.

July 28, 2014
Set in Historic Downtown Bristol, Border Bash continues on Friday August 1, 2014 in the 400 & 500 blocks of State Street. The evening’s events will start with children’s activities, crafters, and concessions at 6PM. Live music begins at 7:00PM with Mustered Courage followed up by The Deep Fried 5 around 8:30PM. “The opening of the Birthplace of Country Music Museum celebrates the rich music heritage of this region. The Grand Opening weekend will be filled with music, and so it is wonderful that we can start it off with two great bands at Border Bash,” says Leah Ross, executive director of the Birthplace of Country Music.

Mustered Courage: Formed in 2010, Mustered Courage bridges the gap between traditional bluegrass and modern roots music. The band consist of three Aussies and a Texan who have risen to the top of Australia’s folk and roots scene, while also sweeping an enormous amount of fans off their feet abroad. Like Old Crow Medicine Show and The Avett Brothers, Mustered Courage breathes new life into the bluegrass scene with a style the appeals to both traditionalists and newcomers alike.

The Deep Fried 5: Out of their hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, Deep Fried 5 has been making funky, soulful music exploding with groove and attitude since 2008 – and they haven't looked back since. The group continues to grow and expand, pushing the envelope of a new progressive funk sound that has undertones of jazz, rock, soul, R&B, and blues, winning the love of different types of music fans through their performances. The approach of the Deep Fried 5 is to bring back the retro sounds of 60s soul and 70s funk, while incorporating a mixture of high-energy grooves and climactic jams.
