Bristol Named One of The Top Cities With Good Working Environment!

April 08, 2014
The Kingsport-Bristol, Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia area was named recently as one of the top ten best cities (areas) with an overall good working environment in USA Today. Employees in the metro area reported having some of the nicest supervisors in the nation. Nearly 65% of survey-respondent felt their supervisors treated them like a partner and 84.6% felt their supervisor created a trusting work environment, more than all but a handful of other areas reviewed.
The report also noted that the relationship between emotional health and work environment is reciprocal. Emotionally healthy workers make more valuable employees and are more likely to be hired in the first place. In the cities where people ort enjoyed work, residents were more likely to say they learned something new every day, a key measure of emotional health in the Well-Being Index.

Student Artworks in Historic Downtown Bristol Inspired by Japanese Artist Hokusai

April 08, 2014
The Arts & Entertainment District is hosting the 3rd Annual Student Art Gallery in Downtown Bristol. In an effort to “Cultivate Bristol’s Creativity,” the district has invited the local schools to help us beautify our community by providing art to decorate the front windows of the former Hayes Furniture Building on State Street.

“I am always amazed at the number of artistically talented children that we have in our cities. It is a pleasure to see what they create,” says Candy Snodgrass, President of Art in Public Places. “I can only hope they have as much fun in the creation of their art as the public has in its enjoyment!”

Each school or group that participates has a month-long period to display their students’ art in the space. The sixth gallery of art went up on April 1, showcasing art from students in the 2nd grade at Haynesfield Elementary School. Hailey Eaton’s students have been studying the effects that cool colors have on the overall mood of an artwork. They explored the work of Japanese artist Hokusai and used the well-known artwork The Great Wave off Kanagawa as inspiration for the project. The students first drew a “Great Wave,” and then added hidden images and details to their work. Next, they used cool-colored crayons to trace over their pencil marks, and then added cool-colored watercolors to finalize their piece.

Artwork by the students from Haynesfield Elementary School will be on display at the Hayes Furniture Building until May 2, 2014.
