Casting call for Barter Theatre Youth Academy workshops and classes at the Paramount

February 04, 2014
Barter Youth Academy workshops engage, encourage, and educate the student through an active curriculum of theatrical experiences, from storytelling and creative dramatics to auditions and the final performance. BYA provides a safe, positive environment to enhance the abilities for the beginning performer, as well as shaping the talents of the advanced youth actor. Coached by caring Barter professionals, BYA focuses on growing each student’s self-confidence and innate sense of play. BYA students develop dramatic abilities on stage, while also learning life skills for the future.

BYA is a non-competitive and inclusive program. Participation is open to any student who wishes to receive training as long as space is available. Tuition is $175 for the spring and fall workshops and $200 for the summer musical theatre workshops. Scholarships are made available for any student who wishes to attend but cannot due to financial reasons.

Open registration for all students. Spring session begins with an orientation known as “Casting Call.” For the middle and high school students, this is similar to an audition process, which the BYA uses for a teaching tool to enhance audition skills. For the younger classes, this is more of a game-playing, casual situation for the teachers to assess their students and determine how best to teach them over the course of the session. Classes at the Paramount Center will begin February 10, 2014 with the casting call from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM. All Classes will held on consecutive Monday nights, February 17, 2014 through April 14, 2014.

Attendance is crucial for success, but if children are absent from sessions due to illness or family trips, there is no penalty, nor are there “make-up” sessions offered. With the diversity of the surrounding counties’ school spring breaks, we try to be understanding and work around a family’s schedule/needs. Attendance is generally not a problem.

Demo night is our opportunity to show what the students have learned throughout the session. We charge a nominal fee ($5) for admission per seat to support the scholarship fund and create more opportunities for students to attend the next workshop. Additionally, BYA has coordinated BYA Family Nights at the Barter Theatre enabling our students, and their families to attend a Barter Theatre production at a discounted rate. The response has been tremendous with more than 450 tickets sold in 2013. This practice has not only excited the students about their own work on stage, but has increased regular attendance from our BYA families to the Barter Theatre.

For more information, email youthacademy@bartertheatre.com or call 276-619-3344.

Student Art Gallery Brings Vibrant Colors and Imaginative Subjects to Historic Downtown Bristol

February 04, 2014
The Arts and Entertainment District is hosting the 3rd Annual Student Art Gallery in Downtown Bristol. In an effort to “Cultivate Bristol’s Creativity,” the district has invited the local schools to help us beautify our community by providing art to decorate the front windows of the former Hayes Furniture Building on State Street.

“One of the most important gifts we can give children is an early awareness of, and an appreciation for, art in their life. Students who study art are three times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and three times more likely to be awarded for school attendance. Participation in the arts transcends gender and socio-economic entanglements,” says Jennifer Wilson, local artist and co-owner of blowfish emporium. “We are very fortunate to have a community space where the work of our local student artists can become such a unifying focal point of our historic downtown area, and to live in a locale that fosters creativity in our youth with events such as the annual Student Art Gallery in Downtown Bristol.”

Each school or group that participates has a month-long period to display their students’ art in the space. The fourth gallery of art went up on February 3, showcasing works by 5th grade students from Saint Anne Catholic School. Paulette Leonard’s students have created bright and energetic pieces that are integrated with their social studies: Amaté bark paintings and Native American Indian Thunderbird projects.

Artwork by the students from Saint Anne Catholic School will be on display at the Hayes Furniture Building until March 3, 2014.

Terry Napier to Unveil History of Steele Creek Park at Bristol Public Library

February 10, 2014
Bristol Tennessee Parks & Recreation Director Terry Napier will speak in February on the History of Steele Creek Park. The presentation will precede the celebration for the park’s fiftieth anniversary to be held later in the year. This meeting will be held on Monday, February 10 at the Bristol Public Library meeting room at 6:30pm. Contact Tim Buchanan, association President, for details on this or other upcoming programs, 276-669-3885, or by e-mail buchanan03@bvu.net. Napier is a native Bristolian and following his service in the U.S. Army he worked for the Bristol Tennessee Police Department. In 2007 he was made the interim director, then director, of the Bristol Tennessee Parks & Recreation Department. He has been instrumental in all aspects of the department with specific interest in the history of Steele Creek Park. His research has documented the unwritten history of what was originally developed as Watauga State Park. With the beginning of World War II plans for the park changed and the Civilian Conservation Corp (C.C.C.) Camp that had spent years constructing the park was abandoned. Under the leadership of then Bristol Tennessee Mayor Stacy Grayson an effort was made to reclaim this valuable virgin real estate as a city park.

This will be followed by "COLLEGE", Buster Keaton's spoof of a most inept freshman's attempt at every sport to win over, if only one, of the girls he adored. Savor the warm beauty of the Paramount 'palace', stirring songs as the pipes sing, and classic laughs at images of "Valentine success and disaster" in a fast-moving hour of the Paramount's original 1930s weekend.
