Bristol article featured in one of country's largest newspapers!

January 14, 2014
City officials were very pleased to see an article about Bristol in the Dallas Morning News GuideLive section on Sunday, January 12. The article, written by Robin Soslow, Special Contributor to the Dallas newspaper, told the story of the city’s rich musical heritage as well as that of other communities from the region such as Bluff City, Surgoinsville, and the county seat of Blountville, proving that the entire area is one where music of all genres thrives. On just about any given day music may be found somewhere in the area from musical stops on the scenic Sunny Side Trail to downtown Bristol.

“It was such a great article on Bristol. I was so excited to hear about it and couldn’t wait to read it. So many of our musical venues and restaurants were mentioned and the beauty of our region was talked about in such an artistic and imaginative way. I hope everyone who reads it will make plans to visit our area this year,” said Michelle Dolan, Mayor of Bristol, Tennessee.

The article featured pictures of the Bristol Train Station, a downtown art gallery where a jam session was taking place, the giant guitar on Volunteer Parkway, the 1927 Bristol Sessions Mural on State Street, and the iconic Bristol sign.

Dallas Morning News has over 400,000 daily subscribers and is one of the country’s largest daily newspapers in the United States.

BCM to participate in Lincoln Center's "Reflections on the Bristol Sessions"

January 14, 2014
The Birthplace of Country Music®, home to Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion and the upcoming Birthplace of Country Music® Museum, will collaborate with New York City's Jazz at Lincoln Center during its “Bill Frisell: Reflections on the Bristol Sessions” shows this weekend, January 17 and 18, 2014. As part of the New York Guitar Festival, musicians Buddy Miller and Carrie Rodriguez will join Frisell in the Lincoln Center’s Allen Room to celebrate the 1927 Bristol Sessions. BCM will present a custom media exhibit for the two-day event. For Dr. Jessica Turner, director and head curator of the museum, sharing Bristol’'s music history is an honor.

"Our collaboration on this media exhibit with the Lincoln Center gives BCM an opportunity to share our story with a larger audience of music enthusiasts outside of our region," Turner said. "It also allows us to showcase one of our region's gems: East Tennessee State University’s Old Time Pride Band. The band members are skilled performers of old-time string music and perform many of the songs recorded in the historic Bristol Sessions.”

The band will perform in the Jazz at Lincoln Center's Ertegun Atrium before Frisell, Miller and Rodriguez's performances.

Produced by Ralph Peer of the Victor Talking Machine Company, the Bristol Sessions took place from late July to early August of 1927 and carved out careers for The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, The Stoneman Family and others. Peer, a keen businessman, laid the groundwork for the country music industry today. With this same spirit, Bristol continues to make its mark on music.

In August of 2014, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, a Smithsonian Institution affiliate, will open its doors to the public. The 24,000 sq. ft. space will tell Bristol's story as the home of the Bristol Sessions through 10 permanent exhibits, a special exhibits gallery, educational programming and a performance space. The Bristol Sessions were instrumental in the early country music recording industry and have been influential to musicians of many genres over the years.

For more information, please contact info@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org or 423-573-1927.

You can be part of the audience January 17 and 18 for "Bill Frisell: Reflections on the Bristol Sessions" without leaving home! Watch it live, online, at http://new.livestream.com/jazz and experience the Bristol Sessions as its never been performed before!

January 15, 2014
The Bristol Public Library is happy to announce award-winning artist Ken Simmelink will be showing his paintings in the Virgie R. Fleenor Art Gallery for the months of January and February, 2014. Although the artist is a thirty year resident of Elizabethton he grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. Sketching and painting have been a long time hobby of Ken’s. In college he majored in Psychology but he also took a variety of art courses including oil painting and sculpturing. A career in aviation and missions, however, left little time for artistic endeavors. Only after retirement in 1996 did Ken take up painting seriously.
