It's the Most Wonderful Time — and Art D'Vine — of the Year!

December 09, 2013
On Friday, December 13, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the downtown Bristol galleries are again joining forces to bring Art D’Vine to the local community. This evening art walk offers patrons the chance to gain after-hours access to merchants, sample domestic and international wines, and enjoy a range of works from artists across the region.

“Art D’Vine is a wonderful way to embrace the holiday spirit and have a festive and fun night out with family and friends,” says René Rodgers, Associate Director of Believe in Bristol. “It’s also a great time to find that perfect gift for everyone on your list! We are giving away six gift certificates – one for $100 towards the image portion of any limited edition photograph purchase at the Benjamin Walls Gallery and five for $25 each towards the purchase of original artwork by Kaylynn Wilster, Ken Simmelink, Briana Morris, C. G. Shaver, and Lisa Boardwine, all artists at 606 State Street Gallery. These gift certificates will be given to six lucky winners drawn from those who have gone to every gallery on the walk and had an Art D’Vine ‘passport’ stamped at each stop.”

As with the previous gallery hops, participants are invited to stroll around Historic Downtown Bristol, stopping at Kil’n Time, Benjamin Walls Gallery, 606 State Street Gallery, One of a Kind Gallery, blowfish emporium, Pretty Girl Station, and Hatching Perspective Gallery. The galleries will feature different varieties of wine for sampling.

With stockings hung and the halls decked, the festive galleries will be highlighting various special events, releases or artists:

* Kil’n Time will be featuring Eat, Drink & Be Merry, a fun book on Christmas traditions that will also be available for purchase.
*The Benjamin Walls Gallery will debut its 28th new image this year – Ben’s 4th new Appalachian image in the past month!
*606 State Street Gallery will be offering discounts up to 40%, noted in the individual artists’ spaces. The 606 State Street Jammers will also be performing.
*One of a Kind Gallery will introduce their new potter, Paul Gaskins, and will also host Gerald Sheppard, guitar player and maker, who will be sharing some wonderful music with Art D’Vine patrons.
*blowfish emporium will have artist D. R. Lawson doing demos, music by Mark Luague and Scott Shelton, and a free vaping bar set up by Creeper Vapor of Abingdon.
*Pretty Girl Station will host paintings by Lauren Seigner, copper and enamel jewelry by Jennifer Murphy, pearl and antique charm jewelry by Alice Pitchie, and novels by Bristol’s own, Chuck Thompson.
*The Hatching Perspective Gallery at the Bristol Virginia School Board office on Lee Street will be featuring artwork from Bristol, Virginia elementary, middle, and high school students, including self-portraits, collage portraits, and crazy hair designs!

This event is free to the public, though there is a suggested one-time donation of $5 with the proceeds supporting the work of the Arts & Entertainment District of Historic Downtown Bristol, TN/VA. We will be hosting four seasonal Art D’Vines in 2014 – March, June, September, and December – so keep your eye out for these dates!

14th Annual Journey's End in Historic Downtown Bristol

December 11, 2013
On Tuesday, December 17th at 6:30 PM (inclement weather date is Thursday, December 19th), Journey’s End will again take place in Historic Downtown Bristol! Starting at the Downtown Center and ending in Cumberland Square Park, Journey’s End is Bristol’s local interpretation of the Latino tradition of Las Posadas (The Inns). Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem is recreated as they go from inn to inn seeking lodging, and the final inn welcomes them in and celebrates their arrival.

How does Bristol Celebrate Journey’s End?

Our inns are several downtown businesses and our innkeepers are various choirs and choral groups from the Bristol area. We will begin at the Downtown Center then process by candlelight with Mary and Joseph singing the traditional songs and various carols accompanied by instrumentalists.

This year Mary will be played by Clair Morison and Joseph will be Adam Gambrell. Along the way choirs from Redeemer Lutheran Church will be at Shanghai; Emmanuel Episcopal Church at Benjamin Walls Gallery; First Presbyterian Church at 620 State Street Restaurant; State Street United Methodist Church at KP Duty; and Central Presbyterian Church at Believe in Bristol office on Moore Street. The final stop will be at the stage in Cumberland Square Park with a live nativity scene and handbells by Central Presbyterian Church.

A special thank you to Southeast Culinary & Hospitality College for providing gingerbread and hot cider, Bristol TN Department of Community Relations for providing the song books at the Downtown Center, David Little and Dr. Fred Gent for the use of the live animals, Bob Greene and Robert Campbell for heading up our processional and working with Joseph & Mary, Robert Hollo and Pete Buhls for working with the strolling musicians, the Ladies of the Evening of Emmanuel Episcopal Church for the assortment of wonderful cookies, and primary event sponsor for the evening Burke, Powers & Harty for providing the star ornaments, luminaries, and helping hands.

Journey’s End lasts a little more than an hour. Restaurants will be taking dinner reservations and several of the downtown shops will be open. Come and celebrate Christmas in the heart of our community!

Please visit www.believeinbristol.org or call 276-644-9700 for more information.

MedExpress BELIEVE "scavenger hunt" winner announced!

December 09, 2013
This year's Downtown Christmas Open House, held on November 25, was a great success — and had a new and fun addition, courtesy of MedExpress: a "scavenger hunt"! This hunt's goal was not to find unusual objects or spot interesting things in our downtown, but rather it was seen as a great way to get people moving around downtown Bristol and into various shops along the way. MedExpress organized the fun activity, where downtown visitors got different stamps on their "passport" from different shops, all eventually spelling out BELIEVE — anyone who spelled it out in full was then entered into a prize draw for a gift certificate to 620 State and two tickets to "Miracle on 34th Street" at Theatre Bristol — a festive holiday prize! The lucky winner was Marilyn Johnston of Blountville, who picked up her prize last week, ready for a great night out in Historic Downtown Bristol!
