Storyteller G. Lee Hearl honored at Beaver Creek Storytellers gathering at 606 State Street Gallery

Janie Staggs presenting the portrait to G. Lee Hearl.
December 03, 2013
Last night, at the regular gathering of the Beaver Creek Storytellers at 606 State Street Gallery, time was taken out of the tall tales to honor storyteller G. Lee Hearl. After hearing Hearl tell the story of Sleepy Tom and play the fiddle and autoharp, artist Janie Staggs presented him with his own likeness, a wonderful pencil-drawn portrait, to celebrate his contribution to storytelling.

Hearl is known as an Authentic Appalachian Storyteller, having been born and raised in Southwest Virginia. Now 84 years old, he has spent years sharing his wealth of storytelling experience. He was a founding member of the Jonesborough Storytelling Guild, a member of the Barter Storytellers at the Barter Theater in Abingdon, VA, and a founding member of the Beaver Creek Storytellers of Bristol. Hearl has been sharing stories and music in the Appalachian area for about 18 years, performing throughout Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia at a variety of venues, including colleges, theaters and festivals.

A wonderful entertainer, Hearl tells original stories, along with writing and performing original songs and music. He plays the guitar, autoharp, fiddle, and other instruments. Some of his most popular original stories are: “Tent Meeting on Beaver Creek,” “The Coffin On The Rail,” “The Motorcycle Wreck,” and “Sniveling Sam Snurd and The Hatter Rock Cat.” His original songs include: “Biscuit Bakin’ Baby From Bristol Tennessee” and “The Day the Ceiling Fan Fell In Sunday dinner.”

Hearl is now retired and can only be seen and heard at Beaver Creek Storyteller events and occasionally at the Jonesborough Storytelling Guild events in Jonesborough, TN.

The Beaver Creek Storytellers meet regularly at 606 State Street Gallery every first Tuesday of the month — the public is welcome at these evenings of anecdotes, oral histories, tall tales, and refreshments, and a donation of $5 is suggested.

However, the January meeting is on a different date, at a different venue, and for a different story — the Beaver Creek Storytellers will celebrate Old Christmas with tales of Christmas cheer and traditions on January 5, 2014 at the Bristol Public Library from 2:30 to 4:30pm. More details tbc closer to the date.

Vance Middle School Students Explore Impressionism and Perspective in Downtown Student Art Gallery

December 03, 2013
The Arts and Entertainment District is hosting the 3rd Annual Student Art Gallery in Downtown Bristol. In an effort to “Cultivate Bristol’s Creativity,” the district has invited the local schools to help us beautify our community by providing art to decorate the front windows of the former Hayes Furniture Building on State Street.

Each school or group that participates has a month-long period to display their students’ art in the space. The second gallery of art went up on December 2, showcasing works by students from Vance Middle School. Two art teachers’ classes were represented. Annie Edwards’ 7th and 8th graders were given assignments to help them explore the idea of proportion: the 7th graders were asked to complete a portrait as a group, each person responsible for one quadrant of the face, while the 8th graders explored both facial proportions and three-point perspective in their assignments. Mike Austin’s 7th and 8th graders have been looking at the works of Impressionists painters, and they worked on impressionist-style pictures in oil pastels and still life drawings in pencil.

Artwork by the students from Vance Middle School will be on display until January 2, 2013.

Highlands Ballet presents The Nutcracker — performances and children's tea party

December 06, 2013
The magic of The Nutcracker . . . what is it? Why does the ballet cause such enduring fascination – is it the music? There is an eternal enchantment in Tchaikovsky’s music, which was written in 1891 especially for The Nutcracker ballet. For the audience member, it is just impossible not to respond to the delicate, swelling joy of “The Waltz of the Flowers”, or the “Land of Snow” that glistens like sunlight on frost. The Nutcracker speaks to our childlike sensibility taking us back to a time of innocence, a time with no worries, a time when one believes completely in Christmas. The first act, a wonderfully ordered party at the Stahlbaum home, with the gleaming tree at the back of the stage, creates a perfectly heartwarming image of Christmas. The second act creates a perfectly fascinating dream world. The Nutcracker will surely cause children to feel wonderment and adults to feel like children again. In this respect it is exactly like Christmas itself. Whether a family tradition or simply a once-in-a-lifetime visit, your experience of this glittering classic ballet will stay with you forever and warm your spirit. The Highlands Ballet will be presenting a premier production of The Nutcracker at the Paramount Center for the Arts on the following dates: Friday, December 6: Opening Night Gala, 7:30 pm; Saturday, December 7: Matinee Special, 12:30 PM; and Sunday, December 8: Family Matinee, 2:30 pm. Call the Paramount at 423-274-8920 for tickets. School Shows are December 5 & 6, 10:00 am. Call 276-623-0822 for reservations. Following the Saturday performance, there is a fun event especially for the children...a delightfully special Tea Party at Shelbee’s Vintage Café, 504 State Street. The children will step into the “Land of the Sweets” with the Clara & the Sugar Plum Fairy. The festivities are gloriously planned to delight each & every child who attends. Land of the Sweets Tea & Photos with Clara & the Sugar Plum Fairy, email deecoler@earthlink.net for reservations.
