Support community theatre through Theatre Bristol's Kickstarter Campaign — and enjoy the upcoming Miracle on 34th Street too!

November 12, 2013
Join in Theatre Bristol's Kickstarter campaign (closing on November 22) — http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1105206361/theatre-bristols-production-of-miracle-on-34th-str — and support community theatre in Historic Downtown Bristol!

As Mike Musick says, "On behalf of Theatre Bristol’s board of directors, I’ve got some great news to share with you. We are extremely excited to be bringing to our stage the family holiday favorite, Miracle on 34th Street. Why the excitement? Because of the success of our previous three productions (Peter Pan, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Anne of Green Gables a New Musical) we are expanding our performances to three weekends and by opening the show on Friday, Nov. 29th, the Friday after Thanksgiving, we will be one of the first events to officially kick-off the Christmas Season in Bristol. Through Miracle on 34th Street, we are holding true to our mission of providing family friendly live theatre for the citizens of our region and performance opportunities for children and adults by casting 35 performers, many of them children. With a carefully planned strategy, we completely expect to perform to sold-out audiences and actually expect to have to add two Saturday matinees due to ticket demand.

Theatre Bristol has played a leading role in bringing live theatre to the children and families of this region since we were founded in the late 60’s by Cathy DeCaterina. It was Cathy’s dream to make a difference in the lives of children through the power of theatre and the arts. That is a dream we are still committed to today.

Currently we are an organization with no paid staff. We are completely run by our volunteer board of directors. We are a community theatre, run by people from our community. We produce our shows with an emphasis on quality and a premium on economy. Even with the emphasis on keeping production costs low, there are still “the costs of doing business”; royalties, promotional cost, utilities, etc. Would you consider being a sponsor of our mission? We would like for you to be a part of ringing in the Christmas season in Bristol with Miracle on 34th Street.

You can keep up with our progress by visiting our website, www.theatrebristol.org or by liking our Facebook page.

This Christmas, expect a Miracle."

3rd Annual Student Art Gallery Kicks Off!

November 12, 2013
The Arts and Entertainment District is hosting the 3rd Annual Student Art Gallery in Downtown Bristol. In an effort to “Cultivate Bristol’s Creativity,” the district has invited the local schools to help us beautify our community by providing art to decorate the front windows of the former Hayes Furniture Building on State Street.

“Last year’s student art gallery was a wonderful success with art hanging in the Hayes Furniture Building every month of the school year,” says René Rodgers, Associate Director of Believe in Bristol. “We are looking forward to another year of hugely diverse and fun art from the local school’s art classes. Celebrating their works in our student art gallery is a wonderful way to encourage the students to be creative and to pursue and enjoy the arts.”

Each school or group that participates has a month-long period to display their students’ art in the space. The first gallery of art is now up for the month of November, showcasing works by students from Holston View Elementary School. Roslyn Eitel’s 4th-grade art class participated in a project called “HANDS!,” where they traced their hands and filled in their tracing with different shapes, patterns and designs. They then chose their own color scheme for the area outside the traced hand. Her 5th-grade art class’s project is called“All About Me.” Students wrote their name and a descriptive word in an abstract way, and then wrote about themselves within this artwork. They finished their pieces by coloring in the spaces around their words with colored pencil.

Artwork by the students from Holston View Elementary School will be on display until December 2, 2013.

Bristol Public Library's Health Education Series to Examine End-of-life Issues

November 14, 2013
The successful Health Education Series at the Bristol Public Library will continue on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at 7 PM in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting room with a presentation on Advanced Medical Directives (often called a “living will”) and End-of-Life issues. A partnership between the BPL, the Bristol Family Residency Program of the Quillen College of Medicine, and Wellmont, the Health Education Series offers insights into serious health concerns that affect our community and region. Presenters for the November 14th event will be Erin Downs and Dr. Tom Townsend. Only 19% of Americans have an Advanced Medical Directive. Though hospitals have been asking patients if they have an AMD since the late 1960s, many people are uncomfortable or very reluctant to complete the form. “We hope this gives the community a starting point so people can sit down with their loved ones and have the discussions that are critically important as we all face the end of our lives, “ said Jud Barry, executive director of the BPL. For more information about the Health Education Series, please contact Doris at the BPL on 276-821-6148.
