Benjamin Walls to be honored during 9th Annual Downtown Loft Tour!

October 22, 2013
On Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Believe in Bristol will again host the annual From The Top Down Loft Tour. This year Believe in Bristol is honoring Mr. Benjamin Walls for the hard work and dedication the he has given, and continues to give, to Historic Downtown Bristol. Among his many accomplishments, Ben has preserved and restored the property located at 701 State Street, Bristol, VA, also referred to as Cornerstone. This property currently houses three lofts and Ben’s photography art gallery. Be sure to visit Ben, the gallery, and the lofts on the tour!

Ben is a Bristol native, who attended Virginia High School. He graduated with a B.A. from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Soon after college, Ben started his photography business and traveled around the world taking wildlife and landscape photographs. As Ben’s sister Sarah Jane began the process of opening Serendipity Boutique, it spurred Ben’s interest in downtown. So when the Cornerstone property on State and Piedmont opened up, Ben made the jump to property ownership and a storefront business.

The building was built around 1901 as Turner Drug Store occupying the retail level with seven physician offices on the second floor. It was converted to People’s Drug Store in the 1930s; it has also been a music shop, The Letterman (selling letterman jackets for the local high schools), and then vacant for several years. When Ben purchased the building in 2008, the building needed full restoration inside and out. At the base of the crumbling yellow, green, and brown facade was the lone original Cornerstone, thus inspiring the building’s new name and fueling Ben’s determination to feature as many historic features of the building as possible. The renovation project was completed in 2010. He wanted to create a home for his business, and re-establish his roots in his hometown – and he has done just that!

Ben shows great attention to detail in the Cornerstone property. More than 1,800 board feet of historic oak trim and 2,800 linear feet of 2 x 4 lumbers were reused during restoration. Also, seven original transom doors were restored and reused in the space, and many of the original walls were incorporated in the improvements. The Lofts at Cornerstone have many modern amenities, including a front door intercom, Art-Glass Pendants, a large roof top deck with panoramic views of downtown, and much more!

Today, this once dilapidated building is recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Ben was also awarded a Regional Preservation Award recognizing his efforts in 2010 by Heritage Alliance in Jonesborough, TN.

Thank you, Ben, for restoring Cornerstone, a beautiful building we all get to enjoy in our downtown!

You can contact Ben and view his photographs at the Benjamin Walls Gallery or through his website, www.BenjaminWalls.com.
