Michael K. Shaffer to Present "Washington County in the Civil War" at the Bristol Public Library

September 09, 2013
Author and lecturer Michael K. Shaffer will present a talk on "Washington County in the Civil War" for the Bristol Historical Association on Monday, September 9, 6:30pm at the Bristol Public Library. Shaffer, a Bristol Tennessee native, is the Assistant Director/Lecturer for the Civil War Center at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. He is a Civil War historian, author, and newspaper columnist, who authored Washington County, Virginia in the Civil War in 2012. His Bristol lecture will cover the topic of this highly regarded book. Though no major battles were fought on Washington County’s soil, it quickly became a key supply area for Confederate armies. Federal efforts to secure this coveted region resulted in targeted attempts to destroy the area's vital resources. Shaffer will discuss the men and materiel Washington County provided to sustain the Confederate war effort.
