Believe in Bristol Offering $5,000 Prize for Local Entrepreneur — Get your application in now!

August 20, 2013
Downtown Bristol is looking for the next business that will continue to help grow Bristol. Today, the organization is announcing the Downtown Bristol Entrepreneur's Prize — a $5,000 award with additional benefits donated by local community stakeholders.

Last year, Believe in Bristol opened an accessible IdeaSpace — their main office and resource for downtown business owners and Believe in Bristol partners. Believe in Bristol continues to focus on strengthening businesses in the Historic Downtown District, and this prize is the latest effort in that mission.

One-page proposals for a new downtown business from prospective entrepreneurs are due on Thursday, August 29, 2013. A judging panel will narrow these down to the top five proposals, and the top five will then be asked to prepare and present a formal business plan in October. A winner will then be chosen from these five entrepreneurs.

The Downtown Bristol Entrepreneur's Prize will include $5,000 to be used towards rent on a downtown space, a 1/4 page ad in the Bristol Herald Courier, Believe in Bristol promotion, time with a financial planner, bank discounts, time with a CPA, time with a digital strategist, a free ribbon cutting with enrollment in the Bristol Chamber of Commerce membership, and 3 months of free internet. Prizes beyond $5,000 are subject to change.

Thank you to the following sponsors — Virginia Main Street Program, Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, Alpha Natural Resources, Wells Fargo, Bristol Herald Courier, First Tennessee Foundation, City of Bristol, Virginia and City of Bristol, Tennessee.

The rules and entry form can be found online at BelieveInBristol.org/Business or at the Believe in Bristol office, 36 Moore St, Bristol, VA.

Downtown Bristol Dentist Changing the Perception of The Dental Chair

August 20, 2013
While it may seem unlikely anyone would confuse a dental visit with a trip to a spa, Bristol dentist, Janet Hatcher Rice, is out to change that perception with a patient-centric approach to care that embodies the essence of holistic health care.

Warm lighting, soothing sounds and an environment for healing, coupled with state-of-the-art technologies and advanced training, are part of Hatcher Rice’s treatment protocols for a positive experience in the dental chair.

“Transforming someone’s smile is a powerful thing,” said Hatcher Rice. “It is a tremendous confidence booster, and, essentially, is like creating art,” she said.

With the heart of a healer, and the vision of an artist, Hatcher Rice has recently undergone a transformation of her own — -creating an image for her practice that is every bit as impressive as one of her patient’s new smiles.

“My practice is now named Rice Dental Arts because so much of what we accomplish lies in the esthetics, or the ‘art’ of dentistry,” she explained.

While Hatcher Rice’s delivery may be wrapped in a non-traditional package, she explains that at the core is a highly trained staff with an exceptional educational provenance.

“As a practice, we are true believers that preventive care and education are the keys to lifelong dental health. We strive to provide ‘dental health care’ versus ‘disease care,’ she explained.

“Not only are we focused on the beauty of a smile, we’re also concerned about a patient’s health. Numerous studies have linked dental health to heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Dental health is an important part of a healthy lifestyle,’ she added.

Dr. Hatcher Rice graduated from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University in 1985. Dr. Rice also holds a RDH degree from ETSU and practiced dental hygiene from 1977 to 1985.

An author, lecturer and laser enthusiast, she incorporated laser technology into her practice in 1993, and has lectured on lasers for the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Texas Dental Association, the Yankee Dental meeting and many more. In 1999, she received the Leon Goldman Award of Clinical Excellence from the Academy of Laser Dentistry and became their first female President in 2004.

The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) awarded her the association’s Fellowship Award during the AGD 2013 Annual Meeting & Exhibits held recently in Nashville, Tenn.

Her practice, Rice Dental Arts, is located in Bristol, TN. Her innovative approach to dental care, delivered around the concept of Spa Dentistry, incorporates advancements in dental technology and techniques into a spa atmosphere centered on the individual.

Hatcher Rice’s new website mirrors her approach to dental care.“The website is easily navigable, and offers a wealth of information about Rice Dental Arts,” she said.

“It provides all the information necessary for a patient to determine if our approach to their treatment will be a good fit with the dental goals they have in mind, and is an important conduit for further dialogue about the importance of dental health to physical well-being,” she added.

Rice Dental Arts is located at 136 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, Bristol, TN. For more information, visit ricedentalarts.com, or call (423) 989-7733.
