World-famous Budweiser Clydesdales in Historic Downtown Bristol

July 16, 2013
The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales, the symbol of quality and tradition for Anheuser-Busch since 1933, will be in Cumberland Square Park in Bristol, Virginia from July 16 through July 21 to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of Walling Distributing Co.

Weather permitting, the eight-horse hitch will make four processions through Historic Downtown Bristol on Friday, July 19 at 5:00pm and 6:30pm; and again on Saturday, July 20 at 5:00pm and 7:00pm. During the remainder of their time in Bristol, the legendary Clydesdales will be on view to the public for photos and interaction, and will participate in specially planned events including Believe in Bristol’s Border Bash on Friday, July 19 and “Party in the Park with the Clydesdales,” on Saturday, July 20 sponsored by City of Bristol, VA, Believe in Bristol, Birthplace of Country Music and Walling Distributing. Both events will feature music and food and craft vendors.

As the Anheuser-Busch distributor in southwestern Virginia, Walling Distributing has been a respected mainstay in the Bristol Virginia community since 1962, and has a market share that is among the top in the entire United States.A stalwart supporter of the communities they serve, officials with Walling Distributing see the Clydesdales’ visit as a way to give something back to the region that has been so instrumental to the success of their family-owned business.

“The Clydesdales are easily the most iconic symbol of any brand in history,” said Mark Walling, President, Walling Distributing. “Moreover, they have the ability to transcend all age groups and captivate the hearts of all they come in contact with. You can’t help but be enthralled by these beautiful creatures, and we are honored they are joining us for this significant milestone in our company’s history.” he added.

Horses chosen for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be at least three years of age, stand approximately 18 hands – or six feet – at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2000 pounds, must be bay in color, have four white legs, a blaze of white on the face and a black mane and tail. A gentle temperament is very important as hitch horses meet millions of people each year.

A single Clydesdale hitch horse will consume as much as 20-25 quarts of feed, 40-50 pounds of hay and 30 gallons of water per day.

Each hitch travels with a Dalmatian. In the early days of brewing, Dalmatians were bred and trained to protect the horses and guard the wagon when the driver went inside to make deliveries.

** Please note that the Clydesdales will be away from Bristol on Thursday, July 18, in the afternoon / evening due to another commitment.

Border Bash in Cumberland Square Park

July 16, 2013
It's time for Border Bash again, and we will be in Cumberland Square Park on Friday, July 19 for this event since the Clydesdales will also be there! Don't forget that you can see the horses in full-hitch between 5 and 7pm on Friday night too.

The sixth Border Bash concert will feature the music of Barlow Gin & The Hatchetmen and Field Report. Food and arts & craft vendors, along with children's activities, will also be a highlight of the evening!

Barlow Gin & The Hatchetmen
Elvis would be proud. Back in the day, hardly anybody knew about jazz, much less rockabilly. Elvis embraced this obscure phenomenon. Which is a huge coincidence, because Barlow Gin is an obscure phenomenon, too. But just because they aren’t famous doesn’t mean they aren’t great. Take one guy from here, another couple of guys from there. Mix in an oddball drummer. Stir in one mean Mama. Sort of like the good ol’ days — a potent, hip switchin’ brew. Yep. Elvis would probably like it a lot. Ask him when you see him. Consisting of members Kat Rush (lead vocals), Mack Partain (Rhythm Guitar/Vocals), Gary Redden (Lead Guitar), Chris Young (Bass Guitar), Justin Camacho (Trumpet/Cornet/Flugelhorn/Harmonica/Vocals), Mary Munsey (Keyboard/Saxophone/Vocals), Bob Ballengee (Percussion), and Justin Louthian (Percussion), Barlow Gin & The Hatchetmen leave the stage with a breath of air that’s old fashioned, yet fresh.

Field Report
Field Report began with leader Chris Porterfield, who originally played with Justin Vernon, now the creative force behind Bon Iver, in their own band DeYarmond Edison. After the band’s breakup, Porterfield worked on his own band project, and then eventually changed his focus to work on the band Field Report. According to Billboard Magazine, The Counting Crows, Emmylou Harris, and Aimee Mann each invited Field Report to open shows for them. The band’s self-titled album is already receiving rave reviews from Rolling Stone, NPR, Pitchfork and Time.

Border Bash is hosted by Believe in Bristol, Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, and Birthplace of Country Music®, and Celebrate Bristol on the 4th of July. Our sponsors in 2013 include AACA, Bank of Tennessee, Blakley-Mitchell, Bristol Herald Courier, Bristol Virginia Utilities, Burke, Powers & Harty, Campbell Printing, Child Study Club, Citizens Bank, City of Bristol, TN, City of Bristol, VA, Coca-Cola, Cranberry Lane, Edward Jones Investments, Express AV Productions, First Bank of Virginia, First Tennessee Foundation, William and Brenda Johnstone, Kerr-Boswell Inc., King University, Mary Landrum, MedExpress, Merrill Lynch, Serendipity, Tom and Barbara Smith, Spiegler Blevins & Company, Strongwell, Tri-City Tent & Event, Walling Distributing, WCYB News 5, Wells Fargo, WAEZ 94.9, and Z-Rock 99.3.
