Calling All Artists! Come join in our Artists' Power Hour and Art Swap events as part of State of the Arts Weekend

May 29, 2013
Calling all artists! We want YOU to participate in two exciting art events as part of Believe in Bristol’s State of the Arts Weekend on June 14-16.

On Saturday, June 15, 11am-12 noon, we are having an Artists' Power Hour art competition at the Farmers' Market in Historic Downtown Bristol. Artists will have one hour to start and finish their art project in front of the Farmers' Market audience. Artists should bring their own supplies, table or easel, along with a tip jar. The artist with the most tips at the end of the hour is the winner! The winning artist will be featured on the A&E section of the Believe in Bristol website as well as the A&E District Facebook page, and also be displayed in one of the galleries in Downtown Bristol for one month. This competition is open to all varieties of artisans: painters, sculptors, jewelry makers, crafters, collage enthusiasts, woodcarvers — we want you all! For questions or to register for this event, contact Bethany at 423-360-7376 or bethanywwilson@hotmail.com.

On Sunday, June 16, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Arts Alliance Mountain Empire is sponsoring an Art Swap Event at the Downtown Center on State Street in Historic Downtown Bristol. What can you swap? Visual artists can swap paintings, photographs, sculptures, and unneeded supplies. Don’t stop there; the swap is also for the whole range of the arts, so it could include fiber arts, ceramics, pottery, jewelry, and their related supplies. It can also include sheet music, instruments, dance clothes and shoes, literature, and even an offer to trade lessons in piano, dance, voice, painting, etc. Be creative in what you offer to trade! We would like you to register to participate, but there will be no registration charge. You will just need to bring your own table and chairs, and a tent if you wish. The swap will also be open to the public, and you may sell any items to the other artists or to the public. Don’t be afraid to barter! There will also be a “free table” where you may put things you would be happy for others to just enjoy. Anything left at the end of the day will be donated to a charity. Set-up time will be on June 16 will be from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., and clean-up/pack-up from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The registration deadline is noon on Friday, June 7th. More details will be available to those who register. To register, call Susan Long at 276-494-9925 or email SLong116@aol.com.

New Theatre Ensemble Presents Inaugural Production at CityMug

May 30, 2013
The Last Call Players, a new theatre ensemble founded in 2013, announces their first production "Animals Out Of Paper" by Pulitzer Prize winner Rajiv Joseph. The production will run Thursday, May 30-Saturday, June 1 at 8:30 pm at the second floor space above CityMug on State Street, Bristol, VA. Tickets are available at www.lastcallplayers.com and at the door. Tickets are $10.00 for general admission and $5.00 for students at the door. "Animals Out Of Paper" premiered in New York City in 2008 and was written by Rajiv Joseph, a recent Pulitzer Prize winner for his play "Bengal Tiger at the Bagdad Zoo." The New York Times states "Mr. Joseph’s observant, pitch-perfect script seems modest at first but is really quite ambitious, dealing ruthlessly (except in the semi-upbeat ending) with the fragility of happiness, the tragedy of impulsiveness and the tenuousness of hope." The story centers on Ilana, played by Liz Dollar, an origami artist who is getting divorced, loses her long time dog, and can't bring herself to fold anymore paper. Enter Andy, played by Ian Charles, a high school math teacher and origami enthusiast who admires Ilana's work. He wants to introduce her to his student Suresh, played by Jenson Lavallee, a brilliant but troubled young man who is an origami genius. When Ilana takes Suresh on as an apprentice the drama "unfolds" as they learn from each other.
