River Whyless and Lizzy Ross Band Featured at Border Bash on State Street

May 14, 2013
Get ready for a summer packed with free live music and family fun on State Street and beyond — it's time for 2013's Border Bash!

Border Bash, the twice-monthly free concert series held annually May through August, celebrates its fourteenth anniversary as a roving mini-fest that has grown to include children's activities and vendors in addition to live music. The concerts will take place on the first and third Fridays, May through August, with the exception of July 4. Children's activities will begin at 6:00p.m., live music at 7:00p.m. Admission is free.

In May, Border Bash will be held on the 700 block of State Street. The event moves to the 600 block in June and July (with the exception of July 4), and to the 500 and 400 blocks in August.

The second Border Bash concert will be on Friday, May 17 and will feature the music of River Whyless and Lizzy Ross Band.

River Whyless is named in the spirit of its ongoing love affair with the natural world. Since its formation in 2009 the band has toured extensively, playing hundreds of shows from coast to coast and into Canada. Its debut album A Stone, A Leaf, An Unfound Door was recorded in the band's home studio in Asheville, NC and released in March of 2012. Its sound has been described as folk-rock, nature-pop, and baroque-folk, but in the end, the members of River Whyless hope only to lend craft to their passions.

Chapel Hill's Lizzy Ross Band performs lush indie-rock-soul with a sweet side. The band delivers rhythmic and at times rootsy pop from a singer-songwriter perspective, with a voice that has been described as "...cigarettes and the smoothest whiskey you've ever tasted" (Steve Markley, Chicago Redeye). The band is currently touring for their latest album, Read Me Out Loud.

Border Bash is hosted by Believe in Bristol, Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, and Birthplace of Country Music®, and Celebrate Bristol on the 4th of July. Our sponsors in 2013 include AACA, Bank of Tennessee, Blakley-Mitchell, Bristol Herald Courier, Bristol Virginia Utilities, Burke, Powers & Harty, Campbell Printing, Child Study Club, Citizens Bank, City of Bristol, TN, City of Bristol, VA, Coca-Cola, Cranberry Lane, Edward Jones Investments, Express AV Productions, First Bank of Virginia, First Tennessee Foundation, William and Brenda Johnstone, Kerr-Boswell Inc., King University, Mary Landrum, MedExpress, Merrill Lynch, Serendipity, Tom and Barbara Smith, Spiegler Blevins & Company, Strongwell, Tri-City Tent & Event, Walling Distributing, WCYB News 5, Wells Fargo, WAEZ 94.9, and Z-Rock 99.3.
