Northeast State Community College Open House at 620 State Street

Northeast State Community College is pleased to announce the opening of their new teaching site at 620 State Street! The teaching site will offer the citizens of Bristol convenient access to higher education. Summer classes will begin June 4. Our office is now located at 620 State Street, Bristol Tn, 3rd floor. Northeast State at Bristol is inviting YOU to visit our newest location at an Open House scheduled for Monday, May 6th, from 2pm-6pm. Representatives from Northeast State will be on hand to meet you, answer your questions, and give you a tour of the teaching site. Be our honored quest along with area legislators, business leaders, and other special guests throughout the afternoon. Light refreshments will be served.

Appalachian Express presents Celebrate Harmony at the Paramount

Appalachian Express presents CELEBRATE HARMONY on Saturday, May 4, at 7pm at the Paramount. Barbershop harmony at its best! The men who comprise the Appalachian Express come from all areas of the greater Tri-Cities, and their talents have allowed the Chorus to become one of the most respected singing organizations in the southeast. The Appalachian Express is part of the NE Tennessee Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and has been directed by Tony Bowman since 1982. Reception for artist Nick Freeman at Virgie R. Fleenor Art Gallery of the Bristol Public Library

During the months of May and June, an exhibit by Nick Freeman will display in the Bristol Public Library’s Virgie R. Fleenor Art Gallery. Nick Freeman is a Bristol native and graduate of Tennessee High School. He has maintained close ties with Bristol where his parents and many friends still live. He credits his creative interest to growing up in Tennessee where he learned from his parents and grandparents that everything can be creative. Freeman has a degree in Fine Arts from Tennessee Technological University. He has shown his work in exhibitions from Virginia to Florida. Each drawing is an original piece and one of a kind. A public reception will be held at the Bristol Public Library on Saturday, May 4th from 6-9 p.m. Freeman’s exhibit will be on display in the Virgie R. Fleenor Art Gallery during the months of May and June. The library is open Monday- Thursday 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday- Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays 2 p.m.-5 p.m. For questions about this exhibit or the Virgie R. 6th Street Celebrates Free Comic Book Day!

Come celebrate Free Comic Day on 6th Street on Saturday, May 4, 10am to 6pm. This free fun-filled day will be great for the entire family — the street will be closed down and there will be live magic demonstrations, artists, vendors, craftspeople, games, authors and book signings, drawing and coloring, pet photos, a collectible swap meet, and fun activities galore! And of course, free comics! This event is sponsored by Mountain Empire Comics, Bridgeforth Design Studio, Top Hat Magic Supply, and Holly Help Spay Neuter. Derby Day at the Foundation Event Facility

Experience the Derby like never before at Northeast State Foundation's Derby Day on Saturday, May 4, 5pm! Live music, live coverage, and maybe even live horses! Pick your favorite horse and sip on the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby — mint juleps. There will be a silent auction and we will be giving away prizes for Winner, Place, Show and Lovable Loser. Also get your taken photo with live horses! Prizes for best hat! Live music after the race. Soulful Weekend at Shelbee's Vintage Cafe

Shelbee's Vintage Cafe will be offering Soulful Weekends on the 1st and 3rd weekend of each month. We will offer: collard greens, yams, mac n cheese, beans, meat options will change weekly, banana pudding, cobblers and much more! Korean Children's Choir at the Paramount

The KOREAN CHILDREN’S CHOIR will be at the Paramount on Friday, May 3, at 7pm. The Children’s Choir was organized as a ministry of the Far East Broadcasting Company in Korea. The Choir members are selected through a rigorous audition process. The children, ranging in ages from seven to thirteen, receive training from a voice trainer, choreographer and conductor. Cheerful adaptations, warm smiles and thorough professionalism characterize the performances. Colorful costumes and traditional Korean dance add to the excitement and pageantry of the concerts. Admission is FREE with ticket. Tickets are available at the Paramount Main Office (423-274-8920).

Get ready for a summer packed with free live music and family fun on State Street and beyond — it's time for 2013's Border Bash! Border Bash, the twice-monthly free concert series held annually May through August, celebrates its fourteenth anniversary as a roving mini-fest that has grown to include children’s activities and vendors in addition to live music. The concerts will take place on the first and third Fridays, May through August, with the exception of July 4. Children’s activities will begin at 6:00p.m., live music at 7:00p.m. Admission is free. The first Border Bash concert will be on Friday, May 3 and will feature the music of This Mountain and Bryan Elijah Smith & The Wild Hearts. L. C. King Mfg. Co. receives international recognition in the media

The L. C. King Manufacturing Company, makers of Pointer Brand workwear in downtown Bristol, Tennessee, has been receiving some great press lately. At the end of last year, the Pointer Brand apron was featured in both Food Network Magazine and Bon Appetit, which resulted in a large spike in sales. Then, in mid-Februrary, American Profile magazine featured the company in their 10 million+ circulation weekly.

Art in Public Places accepting submissions for its annual Outdoor Sculpture Competition

Bristol's Art in Public Places is accepting submissions from sculptors for its annual Outdoor Sculpture Competition. Up to 10 works will be selected for a one-year exhibition in Historic Downtown Bristol. A $1,200 stipend will be awarded to each of the artists chosen. Emily Smith, director of 1708 Gallery in Richmond, Va., is the juror for the competition. Smith was formerly a curatorial fellow in modern and contemporary art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Inari Wine Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Specials and Events Throughout May!

2013 marks the 10th anniversary of Inari Wines, which has become a fixture in downtown Bristol, Virginia. As a way of saying “thank you” to the customers and community who have made their success possible, Inari will feature drawings, weekly specials, and other events throughout the month of May. Each Saturday in May, Inari Wines will feature 10 wines at their weekly Saturday tastings from 4-6:45pm. Each wine featured in a May tasting will be 10% off for the following week. Every Saturday, tasters will also have a chance to win 10 free wine tastings. One grand prize winner who attended a tasting during the month will receive a $100 gift certificate.
