VW Boys Release Party at Pickin' Porch at the Foundation Event Facility

The VW Boys will celebrate the release of their second recording, Listen to the Music on the Mountain Roads Recordings label, at the Pickin’ Porch at the Foundation Event Facility on Monday, February 25 at 7:00 p.m. The VW Boys will kick off the regular Monday night show with selections from their new CD. Listen to the Music was released electronically through AirPlay Direct to radio personalities around the world and has been receiving tremendous airplay in the short time it has been in their hands. The CD will be available through the VW Boys and Mountain Roads Recordings websites. Come join them for a great evening and a celebration of music. Buechner Institute Lecture by Bonnie Thurston

One of the more pressing concerns of our time is the relationship between faith and culture. The Buechner Institute at King was founded in 2008 to address this vital issue while also paying tribute to the American writer and Presbyterian minister, Frederick Buechner. Bonnie Thurston will be speaking at the Bristol Public Library as part of the Buechner Institute Lectures on February 25 at 7pm. Bonnie has written or edited 16 theological books, more than 100 scholarly articles and 3 small books of poetry. Her most recent books include The Spiritual Landscape of Mark, For God Alone, A Primer on Prayer, and Belonging to Borders, a collection of Celtic poems. Until 2002 she held the William F. Orr Professorship in New Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminar. Her scholarly interests include the gospels of Mark and John, the Deutero-Pauline canon and the history of Christian Spirituality and prayer. She was ordained in 1984 and has served as co-pastor, pastor, or interim of five churches and twice in overseas ministries. She is a spiritual director and experienced retreat leader. She earned a B.A. in English (First Honors) from Bethany College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Virginia.

The ACMA presents the 17th Annual Leon Kiser Memorial Tribute Concert at the Foundation Event Facility

The Appalachian Cultural Music Association announces the “17th Annual Leon Kiser Memorial Tribute Concert,” which will be held at 7p.m. on Saturday, February 23rd at the Foundation Event Facility at 620 State Street in Bristol, TN. Proceeds from this event go to fund the Benny Sims and ACMA’s Leon Kiser Scholarships at ETSU. The concert is designed to honor musicians and contributors to the music of the southern Appalachian region. Bands scheduled to perform at the Memorial Concert include Paul Williams and the Victory Trio, the ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band, the ETSU Old Time Pride Band, Raymond McLain and the Morehead State University Mountain Music Ambassadors, the Kiser Family, Jim Bowman, Duty Free, the Holston Mountain Boys, Lonesome Will Mullins, Lightnin’ Charlie, Tim White and Breaking Tradition. Tickets for the concert are available at Morrell Music stores in Bristol and Johnson City, TN. Tickets may also be purchased by calling 423-218-9931. Smith is the executive director of 1708 Gallery, a non-profit contemporary art space in Richmond, Va.1708 Gallery organizes six to eight exhibitions per year, including InLight Richmond, its one-night public exhibition of light-based art and performance.
