The Great Southwest Road is Topic of Bristol Meeting!

November 05, 2012
The Bristol Historical Association is proud to welcome back Dr. Jim Glanville for an upcoming program on November 5 at the Bristol Public Library. The title of his presentation is “The Great Southwest Road of Virginia” and will detail the little known importance of the American westward expansion though Southwest Virginia, down the Valley Road to Sapling Grove & Goodson, Virginia, the current location of Bristol. The November 5 program is open to the public and will be held at the Bristol Public Library at 6:30pm. The Annual Christmas Luncheon will follow on Sunday December 2 at The Virginia Golf Club and will feature Randell Jones. Jones will present a fascinating presentation on “Trailing Daniel Boone” which is a detailed history of the Daniel Boone Markers, envisioned by a Bristol native and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Reservations will be taken in the near future for this exciting luncheon. The Monday November 5 meeting is in conjunction with the Bristol Public Library’s mission of “Expanding Minds and Building Community.” This educational presentation is free and open to the public.

King College's Theatre Program will present Miller's critically acclaimed work, "The Crucible".

November 01, 2012
A group of young women have been caught dancing in the woods, the townspeople become fearful and false accusations of witchcraft arise, leading to unfair court trials and a tragic ending. That’s just the beginning for Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible.” Due to the accusations of witchcraft, the marriage of John and Elizabeth Proctor is changed forever, as are the lives of many other townspeople throughout the play. The drama is modeled after the Salem witch trials and deliberately displays parallels to the period of American history known as McCarthyism.King College’s Theatre Program will present Miller’s critically acclaimed work, “The Crucible,” on Nov. 1, 2, and 3 at the Paramount Center for the Arts, located at 518 State Street in Bristol, TN. Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. all three nights, with a matinee performance at 1:30 p.m. on November 3rd. There will also be a special performance for area high schools at 10:00 A.M. on November 2, 2012.

The Bristol Public Library & the American Red Cross work together for the Holiday Mail for Heroes program!

October 31, 2012
The Bristol Public Library is working with the American Red Cross on the Holiday Mail for Heroes program. The Main and Avoca Branches of the Bristol Public Library will serve as drop off points for the holiday cards. Cards are being accepted from now through November 21st to ensure enough time for sorting and mailing. Card Guidelines from the American Red Cross are below: • Please ensure all cards are signed • Please send all cards with short appreciation comments. Do not send letters. • Please do not include email or home addresses on the cards, as this program do not foster pen pal relationships • Please do not include inserts of any kind, including photos, as these items will be removed during the reviewing process • We also ask that cards do not include glitter because some cards may end up at the bedside of a wounded service member and glitter can aggravate existing health issues. • If you are mailing a large quantity, please bundle the cards and place them in large mailing envelopes. Each card does not need its own envelope, as all cards will be removed from envelopes before distribution.

Paper Windows Session Seven Winners Named!

Pretty in Pink by Regina Shinall
October 31, 2012
The seventh session winners of the City of Bristol’s Paper Windows project have been named. This session was titled “Event Bristol”. “Of all the events hosted in downtown during the session the one that drew the most interest from local photographers was when the Bristol sign was turned pink,” said Lisa Beckner, coordinator of the project. “All place winners were from this moment in time. I think the uniqueness of the event drew the photographers in, just like the crowd for the flipping of the switch.” The first place photo was taken by Regina Shinall and titled “Pretty in Pink.” “The shot was so unique, the judges were very impressed with the overall look,” Beckner said.
