Come Saturday, downtown Bristol will be a sea of pink breast cancer-fighting girl power, as female-led bands take the stage in the city’s first Real Women Pick Pink music festival.

The event’s main stage will be set up under the big lighted Bristol sign, which since the first of the month has bathed State Street in a rosy glow from the thousands of pink bulbs that are installed. Donations for the bulbs, and proceeds from the concert, will go to the Wellmont Cancer Center and Tri-Cities Susan G. Komen for the Cure, said Matt Bolas, executive director of the Bristol Tenn./Va. Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“It’s been really interesting to see the different stories [about breast cancer] that have come out” since the bureau and the Bristol Chamber of Commerce, which are spearheading the events, started selling bulbs and tickets in September, he said. “It’s been really neat to see the community support for this event.”

He said the idea for the festival grew out of Bristol’s musical culture.

“We’re known for music events in Bristol,” Bolas said. “Our community embraces these kinds of events, where the merchants can spill out onto the streets and open up downtown.”

Bolas said the concert might make a good girls’ night out.

“Maybe someone can buy a ticket for a friend or a [cancer] survivor,” he said. “It’s a wonderful gift.”

But not just for women, Bolas said, adding that breast cancer affects men, too. He said one man bought two pink light bulbs – one for his daughter and one for his wife, both of whom died of breast cancer. Those man’s bulbs – and the bulbs of many others who are missing loved ones because of a bout with breast cancer, will provide the backdrop for the main stage.

Many local clubs, companies and agencies helped put the concert together, Bolas said.

“It’s a great cause,” said Christina Blevins, executive director of Believe in Bristol. “We felt like it would be great for downtown.”

Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion folks helped line up the musical acts for the concert, said Leah Ross, the agency’s executive director. She said workers also are helping to do logistical things like set up fences and tents for the concert.

“It’s a great event for our community,” she said. “It’s historical to turn our sign pink and just to bring, once again, live music downtown. … There are so many different types of acts but that it’s all female-led bands is very exciting.”

Aside from the musical lineup, which includes Kelly Willis & Bruce Robison, Suzy Bogguss, Beth Snapp and Jill Andrews, among others, there are a variety of health-centered events scheduled for the day.

A Zumba party is scheduled for Saturday morning in Cumberland Square Park, and women are encouraged to wear pink exercise clothes and dance their hearts out to the rhythmic music. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and costs $5.

The Wellmont Health Coach will be parked downtown, offering digital mammography, Bolas said, and the Marsh Regional Blood Center will have mobile blood donation centers as well.

Bolas said it takes everyone to pull the event together.

“It’s a common goal,” Bolas said. “To bring awareness [of breast cancer] and hopefully defeat.”

Chris Knight at 620 State

Chris Knight
October 20, 2012
Chris Knight performs live at 620 State on Oct 20 at 10:00pm. Ten years and five acclaimed albums into one of the most uncompromising careers in American music, the singer/songwriter whose work has been compared to Prine, Cash and Nebraska-era Springsteen by some the toughest music writers in America may have finally conquered his most demanding critic of all: himself. “Right now, this is my favorite record,” Chris Knight says of his new album, Heart Of Stone. “It might just be my best. For some reason, there’s a cohesiveness here that’s not like anything I’ve done before. But at the same time, it’s not real predictable. There’s a lot of texture to it as well, but it’s a simple record. I don’t know how that happened. But I know it when I hear it.” Please visit www.620state.comfor more information.
