A drawn-out chorus of “whoa” rang out Monday night, when Bristol’s iconic welcome sign lit up in deep pink.

The lights will sparkle pink throughout October to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

For nearly an hour, a crowd of more than 100 braved an overcast sky filled with dark clouds just to get a first glimpse at the temporary colors.

Debbie Dillard was among the initial handful of sightseers to stake a claim in the middle of State Street for the grand unveiling.

“The sign is one of our favorite things,” she said as she leaned back in her lawn chair and soldiered through a slight drizzle.

Beside her sat a pair of friends who proclaimed their defiance of the weather from underneath umbrellas.

“We’re OK as long as our cameras don’t get wet,” Linda Leonard said with a laugh.

At the train station nearby, cancer survivors penned statements of encouragement onto a 6-foot tall canvas meant for other survivors.

“You will forever be my hero,” one person wrote to a loved one.

The idea to light up more than 1,000 pink bulbs is the brainchild of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce, thought up several years ago during the centennial celebration of the Bristol sign.

“So many other landmarks are turned pink in the world,” Chamber spokeswoman Jennifer Wilson said. “And we have this icon in our city.”

Spectators waited for the drizzle to vanish before pulling cameras, cell phones and computer tablets from under their coats.

“I want to record the split second when [the sign] goes from dark to light,” Randy Dalton said as he held aloft a video camera.

The first flash of pink came without warning and was instantly followed by shrieks of surprise.

“Oh my God, this is so exciting,” Leonard said as she leapt from her lawn chair and took a few steps toward the sign.
