The Paramount Center for the Arts Board of Directors and staff are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of their friend and Executive Director, Merle Dickert. Having worked for the Paramount for fifteen years, Dickert was the public voice and face of the Paramount and helped make it the shining star of State Street that it is today. She championed the Arts in our area and gave daily leadership and support not only to the Paramount, but to our community as a whole.

“She really was a pillar of strength for us,” said Pierce Elliott, President of the Board of Directors. “Nothing happened at the Paramount without Merle being in the center of it from start to finish. Her guiding hand led us to the successes we are experiencing now.”

The Board of Directors met early Monday morning and reaffirmed their commitment to Dickert’s vision for the Paramount. They are developing and implementing a plan to ensure the business of the Paramount moves forward as Dickert would have wanted and decided the best way to pay homage to their friend is by continuing the programs Dickert scheduled. They also plan to host an event to celebrate Dickert’s life at an appropriate time.“We have an extremely active Board and close staff and everyone is truly coming together at this very sad time,” said Elliott. “As our team works toward continuing Merle’s vision, our thoughts and prayers are really with her family.”

In honor of Dickert, the Paramount office will close on Wednesday, August 1 so that the Board and staff may attend her funeral which is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. that day at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Bristol, Virginia. The Board appreciates the overwhelming love and support the Paramount has received from its downtown neighbors and especially appreciates the Dickert family memorializing Merle through donations to the Paramount. Said Elliott, “Even now, Merle continues to be a source of strength for the Paramount. We truly will miss her.”

Beer Tasting: Dog Days of Summer

August 03, 2012
Friday 4:00 pm until 6:45 pm (or until it's gone) $5 per person, at Inari Wines! The “dog days” are upon us. We all know what the dog days are – hot, sultry, miserable heat that grinds on without end, from roughly early July to mid August – but what are they really? And why are they called that? As it turns out, ancient Egyptians believed that the star Sirius brought roasting temperatures down on Earth when it passed close to the sun. This is not as parochial as it might sound, considering that Sirius (which is also called the “dog star”) is measurably the brightest star in the night sky. The name stuck, and we have been suffering ever since.
