By: David Mcgee — Published: February 4, 2012 A six-month-old Virginia Main Street designation has already produced tangible results and should generate additional benefits in the future, officials said Friday. City leaders joined with the Believe in Bristol board and the state program manager Friday to unveil a new sign – marking the Main Street designation — at the corner of Cumberland Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The Twin City received the designation last August following a lengthy evaluation of existing revitalization programs and community support.

Beaver Creek Flood Reduction Project Groundbreaking

February 08, 2012
In 2001, the City of Bristol, Tenn., entered into an agreement with the Department of Army on behalf of itself and Bristol, Va., to conduct a feasibility study for flood reduction on Beaver Creek. The resulting detailed project report and environmental assessment was completed in 2004 delineating project options and establishing a best course of action based on a cost-benefit basis and related criteria necessary for the federal government to cost-share in the project. The resulting plan identified four flood reduction elements to be undertaken, including, removal of the Sears building and channel improvements downtown, modifications to the dam in Sugar Hollow Park, channel widening near 6th Street Extension, and channel improvements and removal of bridges at 8th Street. Phase one of the project consists of channel improvements at the former Sears building site. The improvements include the removal of the existing box culvert in Beaver Creek, sloping of the creek banks, creation of a plaza area, installation of a permanent parking area, landscaping and lighting. The project will create a new public space to complement the existing vibrant downtown areas and further the renaissance of State Street and the community. The project was designed and construction is being managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District. The construction contract was awarded to Aspen Construction from Hackensack, Minn. Work on the project is anticipated to commence the first part of February 2012 and be completed by the end of the year. “The Corps of Engineers knows that this flood risk reduction project is so important to the region,” said Lt. Col. James A. DeLapp, Nashville District commander. “We are ready to move forward with phase one in partnership with the cities of Bristol.” The

BCMA Fundraising Concert to Feature JP Parsons

JP Parsons will be performing at 620 State on February 8 at 8:30 to raise funding to become a Friend of 1927!
February 08, 2012
The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance (BCMA) grassroots fundraising campaign, Friends of 1927, is simple — 1,927 people giving $520 to raise $1 million to begin final construction on the Birthplace of Country Music Cultural Heritage Center. With less than $1 million of the $10.57 million project left to raise, the Friends of 1927 are key to achieving that goal. "We have a large number of talented artists in our region who have expressed their support verbally, but are unable to commit financially," says BCMA Director of Marketing Charlene Baker. "The support of our music community is essential, and our local musicians deserve the honor of having their names in the halls of the new Cultural Heritage Center as a founding Friend of 1927. We want to do everything we can to help them achieve that."JP Parsons will be performing at 620 State on February 8 at 8:30 to raise funding to become a Friend of 1927. Visit www.birthplaceofcountrymusic.org for more information. If you are a local musician who wishes to do a fundraiser for Friends of 1927, call 423-573-1927.
