Lee Vaughn wanted his twin 12-year-old daughters and 10-year-old son to learn about their community and participate in its holiday traditions this year.

So he took them to the 13th annual Journey’s End in downtown Bristol Tuesday night. The event, modeled after the Hispanic tradition of Las Posadas, recreates Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to spend the night in Bethlehem, as the birth of Jesus nears.

For the event, two actors dressed as the couple led carolers in traditional Christmas songs up State Street. Rather than inns, the group stopped at various restaurants and was greeted by singers from areas churches. Everyone took turns singing and proclaiming the joy of the season.

Vaughn said his family always spends Christmas in Charlotte, N.C., but they are staying home so his children can take part in local events like Journey’s End.

“We have lived here for 20 years, and it’s time to rediscover Bristol,” Vaughn said.

Believe in Bristol organized the celebration, which was attended by around 50 people. While the event draws people into downtown Bristol, it also about remembering the true meaning of Christmas.

“During these crazy times, people forget what Christmas is about,” said Christina Blevins, Believe in Bristol’s executive director.

That was what drew Linda and Chris Bishop, who attended for the first time. The couple was concerned that Christmas has become too commercialized and felt singing carols and reenacting Mary and Joseph’s quest fit with the true meaning of the season.

“Everybody is focused on what they are going to buy for the holidays and not on God’s gift,” Linda Bishop said.

The event drew people of all ages — young families with children in strollers and retired couples. Many held candles as they walked the Twin City’s main street and sang traditional carols.

Police provided an escort as the carolers crossed busy intersections.

Marcia Cooper is the choir director at Redeemer Lutheran Church and her choir participated in the event. She said the church has been part of Journey’s End for years and believes it is an important part of the Christmas tradition in Bristol.

“It’s a nice holiday event and instills the holiday spirit,” Cooper said.

The event ended at the Paramount Center, where everyone was served cake and hot cider.
