CIRQUE D'OR at The Paramount Center — Sunday

July 06, 2010
Angela Chang rarely tires of being asked if the Golden Dragon Acrobats' show, "Cirque D'Or," is similar to the more famous Cirque du Soleil. "There are similarities, but what we do is a time-honored Chinese tradition with all Chinese performers," said Ms. Chang, the choreographer of the show, which comes to Paramount Center for the Arts on Sunday, July 11 at 2:00PM, in downtown Bristol TN/VA.

The show, which features 25 Chinese-born acrobats, mixes about 4,000 years of Chinese heritage with modern theatrics and colorful costumes, Ms. Chang said.
The two hour performance is filled with amazing acts of contortion, ballet and dance, flag-waving, board balancing, group bicycling, plate-spinning, a tower of chairs balancing act and juggling with objects including umbrellas, jars, tables, hats and balls, she said.
It is set to the music of various Asian composers, including Kitaro, Narada and Himekami.

"This was the kind of performance that was exclusive to the Chinese emperors 200 years ago," Ms. Chang said. "It was really popular then. Now, we do 300 to 500 shows every year and the American audiences really appreciate it."

The Golden Dragon Acrobats were founded by Lien Chi Chang in 1967.
The troupe was chosen by the National Acrobats Troupe of the Republic of China to lead various world tours. Mr. Chang's son, Danny Chang, later took over as president of the group and chose the United States to start a new tour, Ms. Chang said.

In 1985, New Mexico's Bill Fegan took over management of the Golden Dragon Acrobats.
Since then, the troupe has continuously toured America in arenas, theme parks and other venues.

They have performed in all 50 states and have won several national awards, including the National Association of Campus Activities Entertainer of the Year award.
"The audience in every city is always so wonderful and warm," Ms. Chang said. "We've gone to cities and when our (global positioning system) has failed, people have offered assistance with directions, even leading us to the hotel or venue. There has been so much love and, when people come to the show, they are rewarded with a great performance."

Adults $20, Children $8. Group Rates available. For tickets call 423-274-8920 or purchase tickets online at www.etix.com.
