Virginia Intermont College To Lead Recycling at Border Bash Concerts

April 30, 2012

In partnership with Believe in Bristol, aluminum cans and plastic bottles will be collected during Border Bash Concerts, beginning Friday, May 4, by Virginia Intermont College. The college is recycling on campus and in the community to raise money for the Smith-Canter Gymnasium renovation as part of its “Raise the Roof” campaign. Ball Corporation pledges to match all of the College’s aluminum can recycling proceeds for the Gym project. Virginia Intermont will also be working with Keep Bristol Beautiful — KBB will be gathering other recyclables such as paper, cardboard, plastic, etc.

The Smith-Canter Gym, affectionately known as the “Cobra Den,” is notorious in the Appalachian Athletic Conference for its lively, loud atmosphere that improves the VI basketball teams’ home court advantage. The “Raise the Roof” fundraising campaign was launched to support the following gym improvements:
Replace the roof
Install new guttering
Replace windows
Install new exhaust fans
Install access for the physically challenged

The “ Intermont Green Club,” the College’s environmental sustainability club led by students, is assisting the recycling project.
