Farmers Market Vendor Applications Now Available

March 23, 2015

The State Street Farmers Market launches its 16th season on Saturday, May 2, providing farm-fresh produce, baked goods, meats, cheeses and other specialty foods on State Street in the Downtown Center. In anticipation of the market opening, vendor applications are being made available on-line at www.statestreetfarmersmarket.com.

“Spring has sprung, finally. It feels like it has been a really long winter and we are all ready to get out and play in the dirt,” said Mike Musick, Recreation Superintendent for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department which oversees market operations. “This year’s market will feature a number of new vendors along with our notable established vendors, some who have been with us since the opening of the market.”

A pre-season meeting is being planned for Sunday, April 12 at 3:00 PM in the Slater Center’s cafeteria. The center is located at 325 McDowell Street in Bristol, Tennessee. The meeting is designed to review policies, give vendors an opportunity to ask questions and to get to know other vendors. No registration is required and there is no cost to attend the meeting.

According to Terrie Talbert, the City’s Community Relations Director, the market has seen substantial growth since its initial launch in the downtown area in 1999. “The market began as a small-scale farmers’ market with 10-15 vendors during its first season, but has grown significantly into a signature City event on State Street,” Talbert said. “We are so excited to see that the market has become a great place to shop for a great selection of locally grown produce, baked goods and home-made crafts, but also to spend money locally in support of the community.”

Not only will the market provide fresh produce each week, it will offer opportunities to learn first-hand about items found at the market and how to prepare them. During the season there will be live acoustic music and cooking demonstrations performed by local restaurant chefs and farmers.

The market will again accept SNAP/EBT cards. Participants can scan their card and receive wooden tokens of either $1 or $2 in valued and can use those tokens with participating vendors.

The State Street Farmers Market is open on Saturdays, May 2 through October 31 from 8am to Noon and on Wednesdays 3pm to 7pm from July 1 through September 30 at the Downtown Center, 810 State Street.
