Bristol Public Library's Discovery Series and Worldview Scholarship Series Presents Colonel Oliver North, Saturday, October 8th, at 1:30p.m.

October 03, 2011

Oliver North, decorated Marine and author, will be speaking to the Bristol community as part of the Bristol Public Library’s 2011 Discovery Series and the Worldview Scholarship Series on Saturday, October 8th at 1:30 p.m. at Virginia Intermont College. Oliver North has had many accomplishments in his lifetime including being a combat decorated Marine with the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for valor, and two purple hearts for wounds in action. He is an author, inventor, radio and television host, and founder of Freedom Alliance. “Being the husband of one and father of four” is his best accomplishment says Colonel North.

From 1983-1986, Oliver North was the Counter-Terrorism Coordinator under the Reagan administration. During that time, he was involved in rescue missions and capturing of hijackers. After helping plan the U.S. raid on Muammar Gaddafi's terrorist bases in Libya, Colonel North was targeted for assassination by one of the world's deadliest assassins.

The Iran-Contra scandal and its televised hearings from May to August 1987 put the attention on Oliver North, who admitted he acted illegally, but out of patriotism. His felony convictions were eventually overturned, and depending on who’s talking, North was either a traitorous drug smuggler or a national hero who saved Central America from communism. Whose side would you support? What if this happened again in today’s world?

Colonel North’s books Under Fire and One More Mission are international bestsellers. The latest book, Mission Compromised, is a New York Times bestseller.

Students selected from area high schools and home school will enjoy a private luncheon with the speaker and receive premium seating to the presentation as part of the Bristol Public Library’s Worldview Scholarship Series.
Oliver North’s presentation will be held at Virginia Intermont College on Saturday, October 8th at 1:30p.m. Reserved Seating Tickets are available for $20 and general admission is free.
