Annual Christmas Parade in Downtown Bristol

December 03, 2012

The festive atmosphere is palpable in Bristol, as a record number of local businesses, civic and volunteer organizations, church groups, bands, schools, neighborhood groups and beauty contestants make their final preparations for the 31st Annual Bristol Christmas parade. The parade, which will be held Thursday, December 6, will get underway at 7 p.m. with the caravan of holiday cheer winding up Bob Morrison Boulevard and State Street through Historic Downtown Bristol.

According to Joy Madison, President & CEO of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce, the number of entries has steadily increased each year since the parade was moved to a nighttime event.

“An evening event lends to the festive holiday atmosphere downtown, with folks bundled up against the winter air, and rosy-cheeked children anxiously awaiting Santa’s arrival,” she said. “Our eclectic group of downtown restaurants, businesses and boutiques are always eager to welcome parade-goers, whether with a cup of hot chocolate, or the discovery of a unique holiday gift made by a Bristol artisan,” Madison added.

Grand Marshal for the parade is bluegrass legend and Sullivan County native, Doyle Lawson. Throughout a career spanning four decades, Lawson has garnered numerous awards, including the International Bluegrass Music Association Song of the Year, 1990; Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year, 1996, 2000 and; Vocal Group of the Year, 2004.

Lawson will lead the floats and marching bands that precede the official arrival of that notable ambassador from the North Pole, Santa.

To accommodate the parade route, the cities will close Bob Morrison Boulevard and State Street to through traffic beginning at 5 p.m. on December 6. Parade participants will convene in the parking lot behind Krystal at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Bob Morrison Boulevard beginning at 5:30 p.m., where they will be placed in the parade lineup. Additional parking will be available at the former Food City location in the Euclid Shopping Center.
