606 State Street Gallery Observes Second Anniversary

March 12, 2012

On March 24, the 606 State Street Gallery will mark its second year of bringing the very best of regional artists to Bristol. Artists and gallery patrons will celebrate amidst the gallery’s diverse selections of original work, with opportunities to meet the artists, from 1-3 pm.

Located in the heart of Bristol’s burgeoning arts district in historic downtown, the 606 State Street Gallery is the exhibiting gallery of the State Street Artist Cooperative (SSAC), and is the brainchild of Sam and Joyce Samuel, artists themselves, with a vision to foster the development of local artists and to promote arts in the community.

“Founded by a handful of dedicated artists, in one short year, our gallery has grown to feature the work of over three dozen artisans, and has become the heart of Bristol’s artistic community,” Samuel added.

As an artist-run cooperative, artists of the SSAC volunteer time to staff the 606 State Street Gallery and operate all aspects of the business. “Artist-run galleries are a great place to make a purchase with investment potential, while having the opportunity to become acquainted, personally, with the artist behind the work,” said Joyce Samuel.

According to SSAC President, Jennifer Molley Wilson, the gallery is appealing to a diverse group of artists who like the idea of making their artwork accessible and affordable to hundreds of potential art buyers each week, while belonging to a network of peers who promote and support their creativity.

“The SSAC boasts an unmatched selection of media and styles to suit the tastes of casual shoppers and serious collectors alike,” said Wilson. “Ever-changing work installations at the gallery span across all media and genres, including paintings, drawings, sculpture, glass jewelry, pottery, photography, prints, cards, textiles and fine art crafts created by regional artists who have been recognized both nationally, and internationally for their creative vision,” she added.

In addition to the visual arts, the 606 State Street Gallery also perpetuates the legacy of other artistic genres, such as storytelling and music, through monthly events and informal social gatherings.

606 State Street Gallery Hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm. Artists interested in exhibiting work in the gallery must present examples for jury consideration.
